Happy Days was one of the most popular TV sitcoms of the 1970s and 1980s. It centres on the life of a middle-class family, the Cunninghams, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Most of the early episodes revolve around Richie (Ron Howard), the family's youngest teenage son; as the series progressed, more and more stories were written to revolve around ex New Yorker Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, who was originally portrayed as a local thug but soon befriended Richie and family when he became a huge hit with viewers. As the series progressed, the Fonz became the key character of Happy Days, with everyone else seemingly playing supporting roles.
Arthur (a.k.a. The Fonz ), played by Henry Winkler, is a single, ultra-cool Italian-American auto mechanic who loves to ride motorcycles. Abandoned by his father, Vito Fonzarelli (a merchant seaman) when he was a child, the Fonz now lives over a garage owned by Howard and Marion Cunningham who have adopted Arthur as one of the family. Fonzie hangs out at a local hamburger joint known as Arnold's Drive-In Restaurant and uses the men's restroom as his office. Because of the Fonzarelli mystique, the Fonz is constantly surrounded by a bevy of beautiful teenage girls. All he has to do is snap his fingers and they come a running.

The Fonz's catchphrase is 'Aaaayh!' [accompanied by a thumbs-up gesture]. The Fonz can also start the coin-fed juke box at Arnold's Drive-In restaurant by thumping it with his fist in just the right spot, which only he seems to know. The Fonz's hero is The Lone Ranger and like his hero Fonzie lived by his own code of honor. They included the sentiments "Live fast, love hard, and don't let anyone else use your comb" and "A man saves your life, any favor he asks you gotta answer it" (The Fonzarelli Code).
